WPC’s ability to take all type of genre’s of music and lyrics and mash them together on this album was insane and for him to even knock it is silly in my mind. I think for fans that came along later in the SP catalog, they sometimes don’t quite get Gish and think in the end that it’s the worst of the discography but they could not be more wrong. Its a sad fact: the Smashing Pumpkins stock has plummeted drastically since the bands.
You can still hear parts of GIsh in all the other work WPC has done. I love how the music matured and experimented and branched out from there but GIsh was the foundation of all of that. and the way music was re-shaped by those bands. Siamese Dream has songs that are better but Gish as a whole album is the best Smashing Pumpkins masterpiece. I would argue that it rivals the late 60′ and 70’s with Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Doors, etc. What a time from 1991 to 1996 from a musical standpoint and to be in your early to mid 20’s to experience it. I am of the same age as you and this album along with Nevermind by Nirvana, Badmotorfinger by SoundGarden, Ten by PJ, and Daisychain Reaction by Poster Children (a small local band from the Champaign IL) were, to me, the foundation of a new direction that music was taking.
